The haze did not dampen spirits as staff from SPHM and SPH Magazines made their way to Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa at three thirty p.m. on the 15th of September 2015 for the company team-bonding event, Game of Thrills (GOT).
Registration was done at the spacious hotel lobby, which overlooked the picturesque swimming pool, next to the hotel’s Chill on 5 and the Horizon Pavilion function areas, the venue we would be using for the evening. Waiters were on the ready to serve cold beverages, which everyone enjoyed in the warm afternoon heat. Kudos to the registration team who were so welcoming with their warm smiles, and patience in helping individuals find their teams.
After getting into respective groups, teams wasted no time in decorating themselves with washable markers provided by the organizing committee. There was no lack of creativity, evidenced by the unique ways teams displayed team spirit.
Two groups adopted the theme provided by the haze and dazzled with their beautified masks. Another group came dressed in white tee shirts, and decorated them within the given time. And yet another team, totaled the competition with their femme fatale-esq black lipstick and sunglasses.
Teams then had to take their group photo at the photo booth. This was a chance for them to shine, and convince the judges that they deserved to win the prize for the best decorated team. Despite fierce competition, the best decorated team prize went to Maze Runner, who won $300 worth of Takashimaya shopping vouchers. The best thing about the photobooth was definitely the fact that prints were made on the spot for individuals to bring home as souvenirs.
Staff were also encouraged to take photos and upload them onto Instagram with the hashtag #sphmagsgot to win prizes. The two lucky winners of this contest, Li Danlin, SPHM Publishing Services and Lee Xin Hui, Her World Editorial, each won a 2 nights stay at Chatrium Residence Sathon Bangkok with free breakfast and wifi, and a 3 month wine subscription from The French Cellar.
While waiting for their turn to take the group photo, teams were ushered into the swanky high-ceiling, glass-walled ballroom to prepare for the sumptuous buffet dinner. Mr Loh Yew Seng, our CEO, then gave a short speech, joking that he would not take up too much time. He went on to thank everyone for their hard work and officially opened the evening.
In between photo-taking sessions and piling salads, meats and desserts onto their plates, audience members were entertained by games conducted by the emcee and the lucky draws that followed. This year’s lucky draw featured prizes such as Robinsons vouchers; Michael Kors Miranda Collection Cross Body Bag, Victoria Beckham – Cutaway Cat Sunglasses, Swarovski Crystaline white wine glass set, Cartier Odyssee De Cartier Motif Blue Twill Silk Scarf and a Canon IXUS 275HS camera.
Next up, was the team game. The objective of the game was to build the tallest structure that would stand without external support. The only materials allowed were scotch tape or masking tape, one scissors and a packet of straws. Within a time limitation of fifteen minutes, teams had to strategize and build a structure that would not only be the tallest, but the last one standing. After the time was up, structures were carried outside the ballroom for judging. Despite looking like a seemingly simple game, it was definitely a challenge to build a sturdy structure out of straws and tape. It was also heartwarming to see individuals from different departments work together so enthusiastically.
Individuals born in the month of September were then called to the stage and serenaded with a birthday song from the entire staff. Four individuals were then made to stay on the stage to perform a short dance number. They gamely did the dance and received explosive cheers of support from their friends in the audience. Each received a gift for their effort.
As the evening drew closer to an end, anticipation in the room grew thick as the top three winners of the lucky draw were picked. The top three prizes of $500, $300 and $200 shopping vouchers went to Jaslyn Loh and May Tan, New media and Maureen Lim, Human Resources respectively.
Daphne Long, New Media, SPH Magazines, expressed that GOT was “a good event to mingle and interact with people outside the department whom I would otherwise not have the opportunity to do so”. The day came to an eventful close as strangers left as friends, the memory of the evening etched into their hearts.
