FiRST Moves To The New Paper
New weekly movie section in The New Paper will bring latest movie news to fans
Singapore, 3 April 2009 – From 7 May 2009, FiRST magazine, Asia's premier monthly movie magazine published by SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines), will morph into a special weekly pull-out section in The New Paper (TNP), Singapore's second-most read English daily.
The new section, which will still be called "FiRST", is a weekly comprehensive guide to all things related to movies, with sharp reviews, eye-catching artwork, red carpet fashion spreads and interesting feature articles. It will appear as a free pull-out in TNP every Thursday.
With this move, TNP readers will enjoy the most exciting movie news and the latest gossip from Hollywood and the region, while fans of FiRST magazine won't have to wait a month for the movie industry's latest developments. The New Paper is published by Singapore's leading media company, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).
While retaining the best features of the existing monthly, the new weekly FiRST will have a special look and revitalised content to signal its migration to a more newsy platform in a popular newspaper that reaches out to 623,000 readers (Nielsen Media Index, 2008).
The New Paper's editor, Ivan Fernandez, welcomed the collaboration between the FiRST team and The New Paper's entertainment & lifestyle team that produces the daily Show section and the Enjoy section on Sundays. He said: "We have movie addicts in our midst like Jeanmarie Tan and Sylvia Toh Paik Choo, who has for years made it a ritual to travel to the Cannes Film Festival. We have a contributor in Los Angeles who covers movie press conferences exclusively for us in the US, and our team travels elsewhere to interview stars of new releases."
Loh Yew Seng, CEO of SPH Magazines, said: "This collaboration with The New Paper will enable the FiRST brand name to grow even bigger and affirm its status as Singapore's premier movie publication. With the expanded reach by riding on TNP's high readership, FiRST will be bringing exciting movie content to a larger audience. At the same time, existing FiRST fans will get their fix of movie news more frequently."
The popular movie magazine was first launched in November 2002 by an independent publisher and subsequently acquired by SPH Magazines in 2005. FiRST prides itself on covering all genres of film, from the biggest Hollywood blockbusters to top Asian productions.
The new team producing FiRST in The New Paper will be led by Seto Nu-wen, who is Assistant Editor (Show) of The New Paper and winner of SPH's Young Journalist of the Year award in 2002. Ms Seto said: "FiRST will have pictures galore and delicious tidbits to satisfy fans of all movie genres. The new format also offers scope for limited edition posters to be produced in collaboration with partners."
