After a four-month search, Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, in collaboration with Swarovski, unveiled the winners of the Singapore league of the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award last evening.
Winner Phua Chun Huen and runner-up Joanna Lim emerged triumphant, as 150 people viewed their collections and attended the event at Adrift by David Myers at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. They were joined by international social media influencer and model Irene Kim – the cover star of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore’s Digital issue earlier this year – who was flown into Singapore to support this local initiative.
Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, along with its counterparts from Indonesia and Thailand, initiated the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award in 2013 as a platform for emerging fashion designers to showcase their talent. The regional competition scouts for new talent and creates the opportunity for continued learning by forging a partnership with the internationally renowned fashion design school, Istituto Marangoni.
Kenneth Goh, Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, said: “This year’s finalists have shown great commercial expertise, combined with design know-how, to face the future in digital and on an e-retail platform. Success in fashion today is as much dependent on the runway collection as it is on delivering what customers need in a timely manner. Phua Chun Huen and Joanna Lim will represent Singapore in the regional finals at the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award 2017 on 26 October. Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore will host the final runway show at the National Gallery Singapore as part of Singapore Fashion week, with six designers from Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand vying for the top spot.
The winner of this competition will be crowned after the runway show finale, and will be sponsored a master’s degree in Fashion at the prestigious Istituto Marangoni, in addition to $15,000 in cash and crystals from Swarovski, the regional sponsor for the award.
