Media release: Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award 2018

Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, in collaboration with Swarovski, and supported by ZALORA, hosted the runway show for the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award 2018 at the iconic Capitol Theatre last Thursday.

The finale runway show, aimed at discovering up-and-coming fashion talents from around the region, was the fifth instalment of the regional competition.

Joined by Harper’s BAZAAR Indonesia, Thailand and India, a total of eight designers presented their Swarovski crystal-studded collections at an exhilarating runway show in front of over 300 guests, including fashion and beauty insiders such as Iman Fandi and Mae Tan.

 

After the show, the regional winner was announced: Andrew Low from Singapore wowed judges with his Daydreaming by Andre collection and walked away with a prestigious master’s degree scholarship in Fashion and Luxury Brand Management from Istituto Marangoni (at either its Paris, London, Florence or Milan campuses), a spread in all four editions of Harper’s BAZAAR and a cash prize of $10,000.

 

The two runners-up, Andandika Surasetja from Indonesia and Gaurav from India, each walked away with a short-course scholarship at Istituto Marangoni.

 

Kenneth Goh, Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, said: “Andrew showed great winning potential right from the start. Translating his fantastical ideas about dreams into real, wearable fashion was something we helped him realise in a practical way. The judges picked him to win in the end because he showed honesty, integrity and incredible tailoring in his collection. The mix of Liberty print fabrics and that cool masculine vibe, coupled with embroidery on denim and checks, made his collection contemporary and wearable. On top of that, his enthusiasm and solid business plans will put him in good stead as he embarks on a fashion design course; he has a promising future in fashion.”

Andrew Low, a 27-year-old student at Raffles Design Institute, said: “Everything feels so surreal. I am really thankful for my family, my school, the Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore team and the mentors. Without their guidance, I wouldn’t have won the competition and have the chance to further my fashion journey at Istituto Marangoni. I’m excited at what the future has to bring!”

 

Adding to the glamour of the runway show, RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars performer and recording artist Detox, flew in especially for the occasion. She performed an original number, “She’s Gotta Habit”, a song that is all about an obsession with fashion, as she led the pack of models strutting down the runway, making for a rousing finale and the perfect opening act for the after-party at Capitol Theatre. Detox also showed her love for local designers at the event, dressed in a stunning ensemble by established Singapore couturier, Lai Chan.

About Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award

The Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award was launched in 2013 with the aim of discovering and developing the skills of new fashion design talent in the region.

 

A regional competition to seek out and nurture new talent from across Asia, the competition promotes creativity while creating the opportunity for continued learning through a partnership with internationally renowned fashion design school, Istituto Marangoni and synergistic partners such as Swarovski and e-retailer, ZALORA.

 

Each year, participating editions of Harper’s BAZAAR recruit, mentor and select two finalists of their local competition who will move on to compete in the regional stage of the competition, hosted in Singapore since 2014.
