“Expatpreneurs are looking for an opportunity, and they can’t find it in traditional ways. They take a deep breath and take a chance.”
This quote by Dr. Yvonne McNulty, Senior Lecturer at SIM University – and one of the researchers who coined the term “expat-preneur” in 2015 – appears in The Finder’s newest issue.
Themed around work, career and money, this “Work It!” Issue 280 showcases successful, respected expatriate business owners in Singapore. Specifically, in our eight-page “The Finder Expatpreneur Awards 2017” cover story, we honour 29 inspiring individuals and 33 businesses, total, in four categories: Lifestyle, Home, Beauty + Wellness and Kids + Family. As Singapore’s oldest publication for expatriates – having been started by two Australian expat women as a curated classified listing, The Finder is uniquely suited to create these first-ever Expatpreneur Awards.
How did we select the honourees? Each of the Expatpreneur Awardees met a criteria established by Dr. McNulty, whom we consulted while vetting, in her own research: To be considered an expatpreneur in Singapore, the person needs to be a foreigner who moves here, starts a registered business and earns enough profit to have to pay income tax.
We also considered if the businesses have created a new niche or opportunity in Singapore. For instance, the 2017 honourees include Australian Harry Grover, who opened 40 Hands in Tiong Bahru in 2010 and has since founded international Common Man Coffee Roasters, as well as self-described former “third-culture kid” Dr. Vanessa von Auer, who heads both VA Psychology Center and the boutique Integrated International School.
“In keeping with The Finder’s emphasis on inclusivity, we selected Awardees who moved to Singapore from such diverse places as South Africa, France, Brazil, Malaysia, the Czech Republic and at least six other countries!” says The Finder’s Publisher Eileen Chia, who was recently named the Head of Product and Partnerships for SPH Magazines’ Women’s Network. “A couple of our expatpreneurs described themselves as grown-up ‘expat kids,’ which speaks to the global experience of many in The Finder’s audience.”
In addition, because expatriates are guests on the Red Dot, we chose to feature favourite Expat-Friendly Businesses run by Singaporeans. The criteria? The companies needed to provide services and products of special interest or value to expats living in Singapore. Among the Expat-Friendly Businesses showcased: allergen-free and organic food source Ryan’s Grocery and the Caucasian-hair specialists at Visage The Salon.
Later this month, The Finder will host an event to celebrate all of these honourees. Dr. McNulty, who is an Australian expat herself, has been asked to speak about her nearly 20 years of academic experience observing business trends in Singapore, the US and China.
