The Singapore Women’s Weekly will be honouring inspiring women from various fields at its annual Great Women of Our Time 2019 Awards, which will be held on Thursday, 24 October.
2019 marks the 14th edition of The Singapore Women’s Weekly Great Women of Our Time awards. To date, the Singapore Women’s Weekly has recognised more than 200 individuals as part of the Great Women of Our Time awards, with many of these women going on to scale greater heights in their respective areas. This year, we continue to honour working women who are making a difference in their respective fields such as Arts & Media; Design & Style; Public Service & Education; Sports, Health & Wellness; Finance & Commerce; and Science & Technology.
The nominees this year have achieved success through a combination of personal strength, smarts and heart. They include award-winning actress-producer in Singapore and Malaysia, Tan Kheng Hua; Singapore’s first professional female boxer, Nurshaidah Roslie and passionate primatologist, Dr Andie Tan.
A well-known and respected award-winning actress-producer in Singapore and Malaysia, Tan Kheng Hua made waves as Margaret in the iconic Singapore sitcom Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd, a role that won her Best Actress (Comedy) at the 2002 Asian Film Awards, and then went on to make history as Kerry Chu in 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, the first Hollywood production to feature an all Asian cast in over 25 years.
Singapore’s first professional female boxer, Nurshahidah won the Asian featherweight championship belt from the World Boxing Council in 2017 and was one of the finalists of the World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific super bantamweight title. Nicknamed ‘The Sniper’, she was also awarded with Asia’s Female Champion of the Year 2017 from the World Boxing Council and was the highest-ranking female featherweight boxer from Asia as of May 2018.
A passionate primatologist, Dr Andie Tan has played a pivotal role in protecting the endangered Raffles’ banded langur, by chairing the working group to study and conserve the species. She also volunteers as the president of the Jane Goodall institute and does meaningful work in educational outreach, raises awareness and promotes appreciation for our local wildlife.
Apart from the three nominees, another 15 women have also been nominated for this year’s awards, having exhibited excellence in their professions and made significant contributions to public service. (Please refer to the attached nominee list). Ms Sun Xueling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of National Development will grace the event as the Guest of Honour.
Your journalist and photographer/video crew are cordially invited to cover the awards presentation. Interviews with the award winners can be arranged on-site.
