Media Release: Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award 2019 crowns Kelly Vallerie from Indonesia as its winner

Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, in collaboration with Swarovski, and supported by ZALORA, hosted the runway show for the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award 2019 at Capitol Theatre on Wednesday night (30 Oct).

 

The finale runway show, in its sixth instalment this year, is aimed at discovering up-and-coming fashion talents from around the region.

 

Joined by Harper’s BAZAAR Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, a total of eight designers presented their Swarovski crystal-studded collections at a runway show in front of over 350 guests, including fashion and beauty insiders such as Fiona Xie, Aisyah Aziz, Wendy Jacobs, Iman Fandi and Andrea Chong. 

 

After the show, the regional winner was announced: Kelly Vallerie from Indonesia, wowed the judges with her FREAKS by KELLY VALLERIE collection and walked away with a master’s degree scholarship in Fashion and Luxury Brand Management from Istituto Marangoni (at its Paris, London, Florence or Milan campus), a spread in all four editions of Harper’s BAZAAR and a cash prize of $10,000. 

 

The two runners-up, Lê Hoàng Sơn from Vietnam and Rena Kok from Singapore, each walked away with a short-course scholarship at Istituto Marangoni.

 

Kenneth Goh, Editor-in-Chief of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore, said: “Kelly truly embraces what consumers are looking for in design and fashion: An appreciation for the environment and a true sense of self and authenticity, coupled with craftsmanship and originality. Her ingenious transformable designs allow you to inject your own personality and style into the clothes through your personal interpretation of her multifunctional fashion. By engaging with local artisans and encouraging sustainability through using off-end fabrics, Kelly is what I would call a designer for the 22nd century; she is so deserving of the win this year.”

 

Kelly Vallerie, a 23-year-old graduate from LaSalle College Jakarta, said: “Be yourself, be original! Life is full of learning and surprises. I believe if you put your heart and soul into what you love, your hard work will be awarded. I am thankful for my family, my school, both the Harper’s BAZAAR Indonesia and Singapore teams, and the mentors who have been supporting me throughout the competition! Without their guidance, I wouldn’t have won the competition and have the chance to further my fashion journey at Istituto Marangoni. I’m thrilled to see what the future will bring!”

 

Local musicians Benjamin and Narelle Kheng performed their new releases, titled “Wicked” and “Blue” respectively. The siblings led the pack of models strutting down the runway, making for a rousing finale and the perfect opening act for the after-party at Capitol Theatre.

About Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award

The Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award was launched in 2013 with the aim of discovering and developing the skills of new fashion design talent in the region. 

 

A regional competition to seek out and nurture new talent from across Asia, the Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Award promotes creativity while creating the opportunity for continued learning through a partnership with internationally renowned fashion design school Istituto Marangoni and synergistic partners such as Swarovski and e-retailer ZALORA.

 

Each year, participating editions of Harper’s BAZAAR recruit, mentor and select two finalists of their local competition, who will move on to compete in the regional stage of the competition, hosted in Singapore since 2014. The regional winner of the competition walks away with a master’s degree scholarship at Istituto Marangoni, a spread in all participating editions of Harper’s BAZAAR as well as a cash prize.
